YouTube has recently released a video congratulating the game's community for reaching 1 trillion views on their platform. The video starts with the famous song, We Built This City, by Starship, with certain words changed to fit the aesthetics of the game.
"The reason why Minecraft has been so successful over YouTube is that because YouTube videos are a way to tell stories. Since, when you have Minecraft, and you can tell any story you want in a Minecraft world, it's a big reason why we have so many people creating Minecraft content," Winters added.
The first-ever Minecraft video on YouTube was uploaded by YouTuber @jwaap, nearly 12 years ago on May 17, 2009. The one-minute long video shows the building of a structure where you can see the player go through different areas of the structure. Minecraft has also launched a latest new easter egg-filled "Minecraft Museum" video to celebrate the huge amount of Minecraft content.
Additionally, a page released on the site dedicated to this record has been launched. It contains infographics and video viewership statistics for Minecraft since 2010.
To demonstrate how much 1 trillion views are, YouTube cites a few examples. For example, if each of these views were only 1 second long, then it would take over 31,000 years for just a trillion views. If each of the views were transformed into Minecraft blocks (1 cubic meter), then a stack of such blocks could reach from the Earth to the Sun and back. And there would still be more than 11 million km to spare.
After analyzing the statistics of Minecraft videos, starting in 2010, the YouTube administration has made several interesting conclusions. So, the most popular are animated videos for the game. Although the number of video views in most other categories is constantly growing.
The graph shows that over the years, the most popular Minecraft videos are above all animated or demonstrations of the possibilities of the game, always more ingenious and surprising.
- 2010: Minecraft videos accumulate 181.7 million views
- 2012: Minecraft videos accumulate 14.6 billion views
- 2014: Minecraft videos accumulate 72.4 billion views
- 2016: Minecraft videos accumulate 217.6 billion views
- 2018: Minecraft videos accumulate 500 billion views
- 2020: Minecraft videos accumulate 767.5 billion views
- 2021: Minecraft videos accumulate 1000 billion views
Feeling the rapid success grow, Microsoft had bought Mojang in 2014 for a whopping $ 2.5 billion. And it is clear that the company has become flourishing since the franchise is now exported to all media on the market.
The success of Minecraft wouldn’t be much without these creators who share their passion and some, like Aphmau or PrestonPlayz, are followed by more than 10 million players. As Google says, “The success story of Minecraft on YouTube is one of endless creativity fueled by changes to the game, changes to YouTube, and the ever-changing interests of creators and their viewers. “
It took about 8 years for this community to generate 500 billion views, but only about two more to double to a trillion.
While waiting to reach the 2 trillion, Mojang is currently developing new games, at least two of which could be related to the Minecraft universe.
